Overview

A hot tub is one of the least forgiving electrical installations in a backyard: it’s a high-current 240V load sitting in and around water, and Ontario Electrical Code is specific about exactly how it has to be wired. We install the dedicated GFCI-protected circuit, the code-required disconnect, and the equipotential bonding grid that ties together the tub’s metal components, pump, and surrounding conductive surfaces, for both new hot tub and swim spa installations and replacements of an existing unit’s wiring. Why It Matters

Most hot tubs draw enough current that they need their own 40–60A double-pole circuit, and that circuit has to run through a Class A GFCI breaker, ground-fault protection is not optional around a tub full of water and bathers. Code also requires a disconnect switch that’s within sight of the tub but set back at least 1.5 metres from the water’s edge, so it’s reachable in an emergency without anyone standing next to the tub to use it. The part that’s easy to miss without an electrician is bonding: the pump, heater, any metal ladder or rail, and the conductive surfaces within 1.5 metres of the tub all need to be tied into an equipotential bonding grid, which is what keeps stray voltage from creating a shock hazard in and around the water. Skipping or improperly wiring any one of these three pieces, the circuit, the disconnect, or the bonding, is what causes a hot tub installation to fail inspection or, worse, become a real safety hazard.
