A hot tub looks like a simple plug-and-fill purchase, but the electrical side of the installation is one of the more tightly regulated pieces of residential wiring, for good reason: it's a high-current load sitting in and around water. Here's what Ontario Electrical Code actually requires before a hot tub can be filled and switched on.
A Dedicated, GFCI-Protected Circuit
Most hot tubs draw enough current to need their own 40-60A double-pole circuit, run from the panel specifically for the tub, protected by a Class A GFCI breaker. A shared circuit or a standard outlet isn't rated for the load and doesn't provide the ground-fault protection code requires around water.
A Disconnect You Can Actually Reach
Code requires a disconnect switch within sight of the tub, but set back at least 1.5 metres from the water's edge. The distance matters: it has to be reachable in an emergency without anyone standing next to the tub to use it.
Bonding Every Metal Component
This is the step that's easy to get wrong without an electrician. The tub's pump, heater, any metal ladder or rail, and conductive surfaces within 1.5 metres of the tub all need to be tied into an equipotential bonding grid. Bonding is what prevents a voltage difference between those surfaces from becoming a shock hazard in and around the water, and it's a common reason a DIY or unpermitted hot tub installation fails inspection.
Why This Isn't a DIY or Handyman Job
Between the dedicated circuit sizing, GFCI requirements, disconnect placement, and bonding grid, a hot tub installation has more code-specific detail than most backyard electrical work. Getting any one piece wrong isn't just an inspection failure, it's a real shock hazard in a wet environment. It's also why most hot tub retailers require proof of a licensed, permitted installation before honouring a warranty.
