Why AC Units Can't Share a Circuit

Air conditioners pull a continuous, high-amperage load the moment the compressor starts, which is a different kind of draw than lighting or general-use outlets are built for. Sharing a circuit with anything else risks nuisance breaker trips at best, and an overloaded circuit at worst. That's why Ontario Electrical Code requires a dedicated circuit, sized specifically to the unit's amperage, run from the panel to the outdoor condenser.

The Disconnect Switch Isn't Optional

Code also requires a disconnect switch installed within sight of the outdoor unit. It's what lets an HVAC technician safely cut power for service or repairs without walking back to the electrical panel, and most HVAC companies won't complete an installation, or won't get it inspected, without one already in place.

Panel Capacity Is the Part That Gets Missed

A new 20-60A AC or heat pump circuit adds real load to a panel that may already be carrying a lot, especially in homes with EV charging, electric heat, or an older 100A service.
