Why Your Ring Doorbell Keeps Losing Power (It's Not the Doorbell)

Why Your Ring Doorbell Keeps Losing Power (It's Not the Doorbell)

If your Ring doorbell keeps dropping offline, shows a "low power" or "insufficient power" warning in the app, or your existing chime stopped working after you installed it, the doorbell itself is usually fine. The real problem is almost always what's powering it.

The Transformer Is Usually Too Small

A hardwired Ring doorbell needs a continuous 16-24VAC power supply, and the transformer rating matters: most manufacturers recommend at least 30VA. A lot of homes, especially older ones, still have a doorbell transformer sized decades ago for a simple mechanical chime, well under what a video doorbell actually draws. That mismatch is the single most common cause of a Ring doorbell that won't stay powered.

Your Chime Might Be Part of the Problem Too

Some digital and older mechanical chimes weren't designed to sit on the same circuit as a video doorbell, and can interfere with power delivery or stop working altogether once a Ring doorbell is added. Diagnosing whether the issue is the transformer, the chime, or the wiring between them takes actually testing the circuit, not swapping parts and hoping.

No Existing Doorbell Wiring? That's Fixable Too

If you're installing a video doorbell somewhere with no existing doorbell circuit, or relocating one to a new entryway or gate for better coverage, that means running new low-voltage wiring and installing a properly sized transformer from scratch, including routing through finished walls or exterior siding where needed.
