Security Camera Systems: The Power and Wiring Mistakes That Cause Dropouts

If your security cameras keep dropping offline, one camera's feed is dark, or your recorder reboots on its own, the cameras are usually fine. The problem is almost always in the power and wiring behind them, and it's the same handful of issues we see on a security camera installation call after call.

PoE Switches Undersized for the Camera Count

Power over Ethernet is convenient because one cable carries both data and power, but every PoE switch has a total wattage budget across all its ports. Add a few more cameras than the switch was sized for, especially cameras with IR night vision or heaters, and the switch starts starving ports or shutting them down under load. Sizing the switch to your actual camera count, not just the port count, is what keeps every camera powered at once.

Outdoor Cable Rated for Indoor Use

Cable run along an exterior wall or through a soffit needs a jacket rated for UV and temperature swings. Indoor-rated cable used outdoors degrades within a season or two, showing up as intermittent signal loss or a camera that slowly gets worse before failing outright. It's a cheap mistake at install time and an expensive one to diagnose later.

Recorder and Switch Sharing an Overloaded Circuit

An NVR or DVR pulls a steady load and doesn't tolerate brownouts well. When it's plugged into the same circuit as other equipment that cycles on and off, a fridge compressor, an HVAC unit, workshop tools, voltage sags can cause random reboots or corrupted recordings. A dedicated circuit for the recorder and PoE switch removes that variable entirely.

Cameras Mounted Before Power and Data Are Planned

Camera placement should follow where power and cabling can actually reach, not the other way around. Mounting cameras first and then figuring out how to get a cable to them leads to compromises: a camera moved a few feet from the ideal spot, or a run that's longer and more exposed than it needs to be. Planning the wiring and camera positions together up front avoids the rework.
