Restaurant Electrical Code Requirements: What Inspectors Check

Restaurant Electrical Code Requirements: What Inspectors Check

Fire and health inspections don't look at a kitchen's electrical the same way a residential inspection does. They're checking specific, code-driven items, and a failed inspection on opening week can push back a launch date that's already tight. Here's what a restaurant electrician actually checks before signing off.

The Hood Suppression Shunt Trip Has to Actually Work

Every commercial kitchen hood with an Ansul or wet chemical suppression system needs a shunt trip interlock wired to cut power, and where required, gas, to the cooking equipment the moment the system discharges. Inspectors test this, not just look at it. A shunt trip that's wired but doesn't actually kill the circuit on discharge is a fail, and it's more common than it should be on kitchens where the interlock was an afterthought during a hood install.

Refrigeration Needs Its Own Dedicated Circuit

Walk-in coolers and freezers sharing a circuit with other kitchen equipment is a recipe for spoiled inventory the first time something trips. Dedicated circuits for refrigeration aren't just good practice, they're what keeps one overloaded fryer circuit from taking down your walk-in overnight.

Exit and Emergency Lighting Gets Tested, Not Assumed

Emergency lighting and illuminated exit signs need to actually function on battery backup when tested, and inspectors will cut power to confirm it. A fixture that looks right but has a dead battery is the same as not having one.

Panel Capacity Matters More Than It Used To

Kitchens add equipment over time: a second fryer, a bigger dish machine, a new prep station. A panel sized for the original build often can't absorb that growth without nuisance trips, and undersized capacity shows up as a code issue the moment new equipment gets added without a matching electrical review.
