When a three-phase motor starts acting up, tripping its overload, humming without starting, or running hotter than usual, it's tempting to assume the motor is on its way out. Often it isn't. Here's what's actually behind the most common symptoms, and how a three-phase motor wiring assessment tells the difference.

Humming Without Starting Usually Means a Missing Phase

If a motor hums but doesn't turn, it's frequently single-phasing, running on two phases instead of three, caused by a blown fuse, a failed contactor, or a loose connection upstream. Left running like this, a motor draws excessive current trying to start and can burn out quickly, so this is one symptom worth shutting down for rather than trying again.

Repeated Overload Trips Point to a Sizing or Balance Problem

An overload relay that trips once under a heavy load is doing its job. One that trips routinely usually means either the overload was never set to the motor's actual full-load amps, a phase imbalance is causing uneven current draw across the windings, or the motor is working harder than it should due to a mechanical issue like a bound bearing or misaligned coupling. Each of these needs a different fix, which is why tracing the actual cause matters more than just resetting the relay.

Running Hot Is Rarely Just "The Motor Working Hard"

A motor that runs noticeably hotter than it used to is a real warning sign, not a normal side effect of load. Phase imbalance is one of the more common and underdiagnosed causes: uneven voltage across the three phases makes the motor draw uneven current across its windings, generating extra heat even when everything else about the load looks normal. Catching this early is the difference between a repair and a full motor replacement.

Contactor Wear Shows Up as Intermittent Faults

Contactors that engage and disengage constantly wear out over time, and a worn contactor can cause a motor to start intermittently, chatter on startup, or drop out under load without an obvious pattern. It's one of the more common findings on a motor troubleshooting call and a relatively inexpensive fix compared to motor damage caused by ignoring it.

Getting the Overload Setting Right Actually Protects the Motor

Overload protection is supposed to be set to the specific motor's nameplate full-load amps, not left at whatever setting came with a previous motor swap. An overload set too high won't trip in time to protect the motor from a real fault; one set too low causes nuisance trips that stop production for no real reason. Confirming this is a standard part of any motor circuit assessment.
