Most conversations about going solar focus on the panels: how many, what brand, what roof orientation. But the part that determines whether a system performs safely and reliably long-term is the electrical work behind it, the inverter, the wiring, and the connection back to your panel and the utility grid. Here's what actually goes into that side of a solar PV installation.

Your Panel's Busbar Rating Sets a Hard Limit

Every electrical panel has a maximum busbar rating, and a solar backfeed breaker adds current to that busbar alongside your existing breakers. If your panel is already near capacity, adding solar without checking this first can mean a system that fails inspection or, worse, one that's installed anyway and overloads the busbar. This is one of the first things we check before any wiring goes in.

String Inverters vs. Microinverters Isn't a One-Size Answer

A string inverter converts power for an entire array at once, while microinverters convert it panel by panel. The right choice depends on roof shading, layout, and system size, not just cost. A shaded section of roof that would drag down an entire string's output performs much better with microinverters, since each panel operates independently.

Rapid Shutdown Isn't Optional

Code requires a way to de-energize the DC side of a solar array quickly, for firefighter safety if there's ever an emergency at the property. This means specific rapid-shutdown devices at the array, not just a disconnect at the inverter, and it's one of the items an ESA inspector checks before a system can be energized.

Net Metering Requires Utility Approval, Not Just Installation

A grid-tied system that sends excess power back to the grid needs a documented interconnection agreement and net metering approval from your utility before it can be turned on. Skipping this step, or assuming it happens automatically once panels are mounted, is a common source of delay between installation day and actually seeing your system live.
