Aluminum Wiring: Full Rewire or Connector Remediation?

Aluminum Wiring: Full Rewire or Connector Remediation?

If an inspection, insurer, or home sale has flagged aluminum wiring in your house, the first question is usually cost, and the honest answer is that it depends which of two accepted fixes you actually need. Here's how a full rewire and connector-based remediation compare.

The Wire Isn't the Problem, the Connections Are

Aluminum branch wiring, common in homes built or renovated through the 1960s and 70s, isn't dangerous because it's aluminum. It's the connections that fail over time: aluminum expands and contracts more than copper with heat cycling, and it oxidizes at the terminal, which gradually loosens the connection and can lead to overheating at outlets, switches, and the panel. That's why remediation focuses on every junction, not the wire run itself.

Option One: Full Copper Rewire

A full rewire replaces the aluminum branch circuits with copper entirely, eliminating the failure point for good. It's the more expensive option and typically means more disruption, since it involves running new cable through walls and ceilings, but it's a permanent fix with no ongoing connection risk to monitor.

Option Two: Approved Connector Remediation

The alternative is remediating each aluminum-to-copper junction with an approved connector, most commonly a COPALUM crimp or an AlumiConn connector, rather than replacing the wiring itself. Done correctly, this is a code-compliant, insurance-accepted fix that's significantly less invasive than a rewire, since it works at each outlet, switch, and panel connection rather than requiring new cable runs.

Which One Actually Fits Your Home

Connector remediation makes sense when the aluminum wiring itself is in good condition and the goal is eliminating the connection risk cost-effectively. A full rewire makes more sense if you're already opening walls for a renovation, or if you'd rather not have aluminum in the house at all. Most Ontario insurers accept properly documented connector remediation with an ESA certificate, but it's worth confirming with your specific insurer before committing to either path.
